Neal Heppleston
My journey as an instrument maker began in 2011 at the internationally renowned Newark School of Violin Making, where I studied violin and viola making, varnishing, repair, and restoration techniques. It was also here that I built my first two double basses.
In 2016, I established my first workshop at Exchange Place Studios in Sheffield.
Since 2019, the Heppleston Double Basses workshop has been based at Holme Bank Mills in Mirfield, West Yorkshire.
I now dedicate my practice exclusively to the making of new double basses. Each instrument represents many hours of detailed, considered work, combining traditional methods with contemporary approaches to maintain the highest standards of craftsmanship and efficiency.
Through ongoing research into both historic and modern design, as well as close collaboration with working musicians, I continue to refine my craft, with the aim of creating instruments that are beautiful in form, responsive to the player, and effortless to play.
